Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of recipients for this program varies annually. Last year, 70 students were selected to receive Morehead-Cain scholarships.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a high school senior at time of application.
  2. Must not have children.
  3. Must be a resident of the U.S., Canada, or the United Kingdom.
  4. Must reside in North Carolina or plan to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill through application in the Early Action Referral Program.
  5. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  6. Must demonstrate high academic achievement.
  7. Must not be married.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available for current high school seniors in the U.S., Canada or the United Kingdom. Applicants must be unmarried and have no children and must plan to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The student should rank near the top of his/her senior class.

Additional Information: The Moorehead-Cain Scholarship is a four-year undergraduate scholarship designed to financially assist and academically challenge exceptional students from North Carolina, the U.S., Canada, and the United Kingdom who are attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Morehead-Cain Scholars grow and learn in environments that kindle intellects, challenge capabilities, teach invaluable skills, and illuminate personal goals. Scholars are challenged to make a difference in the world by growing and developing as a leader. Selected students must participate in Summer Enrichment Programs beginning in the summer prior to their freshman year. Although there is no minimum grade point average or test score required to apply, selection is based on leadership, scholarship (academics), moral force of character and physical vigor. Financial need is not considered. Finalists must participate in telephone and/or personal interviews between Oct. and Nov. Winners will be selected from the semi-finalist pool during in early spring.

Award Amount: The scholarship pays full tuition and student fees, renewable for three additional years. Scholars will also receive a laptop computer and participate in summer enrichment programs. The total value of the scholarship is approximately $80,000 for in-state students and $140,000 for out-of-state students.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $110,000.

Application information for this award is available online from the Moorehead-Cain Foundation website. A current high school senior in Canada or the United Kingdom must be nominated by his/her secondary institution; direct applications will only be accepted for a student attending high school in North Carolina. U.S. students outside North Carolina may be considered by: (1) attending an official out-of-state nominating school (go to moreheadcain.org/page/schools-by-state to view eligible schools), (2) applying to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill by the deadline, or (3) being nominated by one of the Morehead-Cain Affiliate Programs (HOBY, School Year Abroad, or the Mountain School). Each eligible school may nominate up to five individuals, depending on the size of the senior class. An interested student should meet with his/her guidance counselor(s) to learn more and to seek nomination. Applications and nominations must be submitted by the deadline date. Students outside of North Carolina are also required to apply for admission to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill no later than Oct. 15. The foundation recommends that all applicants submit their college applications by this date.
