How Do I Apply for Law Firm Scholarships?

Law firm scholarships help to offset the cost of college or law school. They are available from large and small law firms and in many niche fields. Business law, criminal law, immigration and tax law are a few examples.

These vary as some law firms want to help certain kinds of students. For example, Veterans, women and minorities may qualify for the scholarships.

But often they invite any undergraduate or law student (1L, 2L, or 3L) to apply. Law students must attend an accredited USA college, university, or law school. Apart from these criteria, a scholarship may come with a few qualifiers. They will also look at your GPA and record of community service.

Along with this information, an application may ask for reference letters. These attest to your character and may come from employers, professors or mentors.

To narrow the field of applicants, a law firm may also ask you to write an essay or cover letter for the scholarship. You could explain your future goals or point of view on a legal matter. You might also need to describe why a specific type of law interests you.  So, if you have any related studies, internships or experiences, these may help you stand out.

How Do Scholarships from Law Firms Help Pay for College?

A law firm scholarship may be useful if your goal is to pursue a three year law degree. Scholarships may help cover your tuition, fees, room and board and other expenses. According to Data USA, a law degree at a public college costs about $8,698 per year. Tuition is much higher ($42,627) at private colleges. Once you graduate, there are many possible career paths and areas of practice.

Apart from a sharp mind, lawyers tend to need a Juris Doctor (JD degree). The average salary is $120,910 per year. So, this may be an option to prepare for.

An example of a law firm scholarship is Rise to Shine Scholarship. Allen, Flatt, Balladis & Leslie Inc. awards one winner $1,000 to cover educational expenses. To qualify, applicants must have a 3.0 GPA or higher, be a US citizen or permanent resident, and currently be a high school senior or undergrad.

Fawell & Fawell Out-of-State Scholarship

In today’s world, college students do not have it easy. In addition to the skyrocketing costs of college tuition, the amounts students will need to pay for expenses such as housing and transportation have also increased significantly. Many students struggle to cover these costs and ensure that they can receive the proper education and pursue their career goals. Students who attend college in states or regions of the country that are far away from their families will often face additional challenges and increased expenses, and they may be concerned that they will be unprepared to address these concerns. At Fawell & Fawell, we understand the issues that affect students who travel to other states to attend college, and we have created a scholarship program to provide assistance for these students. Through the Fawell & Fawell Out-of-State Student Scholarship, we award $1,000 each semester to a qualified student who will be pursuing educational opportunities in a location outside of the state where they attended high school or where their parents currently live. Scholarship winners can use this money to pay for tuition, housing, other educational costs, or transportation-related expenses.

OnderLaw Children of Parents with Cancer Scholarship

Learning that a parent or guardian has a serious illness is life-shattering. For students, coping with the physical and emotional aspects of a parent’s illness while handling the responsibilities and pressures of school, activities, and social lives can be particularly overwhelming. Our team at OnderLaw knows all too well the devastation families go through when a parent is diagnosed with cancer. The experiences someone goes through are painful, but sharing them can be a catalyst for moving forward. To help honor those who are fighting cancer or who have lost their battle, we are asking students to write an essay answering the question: What would you tell someone about what is important in life, knowing what cancer has taught you? We want this to be an opportunity to open a dialogue about cancer and how it affects real people. Ultimately, we hope this scholarship provides an outlet for children of parents with cancer to process their grief, recognize their personal strengths, and start a dialogue about serious illness, mental health, and the value of living life to its fullest.

Care Throughout The Ages Scholarship

Our team at Romano & Sumner, PLLC represents individuals on guardianship consulting or general trust and estate work, and we see many examples of caregivers assisting with the problems brought on by age, Alzheimer’s, or dementia. In these situations, caregivers make sacrifices for loved ones who need extra help and support. We wanted to recognize the value of this critical support. We are offering a $1,000 scholarship to further the education of someone who has made sacrifices for a loved one during a time in their life when they needed extra care. We will be accepting applications for this scholarship from now until August 31, 2024. We are asking that applications write a 750-1,000 word essay discussing a time when you had to put the health of a loved one first or provided support through a career or volunteer service. Whether they were suffering from Alzheimer’s, dementia, or were at a time in their life where they just needed more help and support, discuss your experience with helping someone else, what life lessons were gained, and how has it changed your outlook on life? Once all submissions have been received, the entries will be reviewed, and one student will be selected to receive a $1,000 award.
