Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must have completed a minimum of one year in a dental hygiene associate's, baccalaureate, or degree completion curriculum prior to receiving this scholarship. Students entering their first year of a dental hygiene program are not eligible; students who are in the process of completing their first year at time of application may apply.
  4. Must be a full-time student.
  5. Must major in dental hygiene, and demonstrate a commitment to improving oral health in the geriatric community.
  6. Must be a student or professional member of the American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA).

Description: This scholarship is open to U.S. students who are enrolled in an associate's, baccalaureate, or degree completion dental hygiene program, with a commitment to improving oral health in the geriatric population. Students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, and be student or professional members of the American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA).

Additional Information: This scholarship is sponsored by Procter & Gamble in memory of Karla Girts, BSDH, RDH, past president of ADHA, and former Chair of ADHA Institute for Oral Health. Scholarships are awarded based on how well the applicant demonstrates the goal or achievement of the scholarship for which he/she applies. Recipients are announced on July 1.

Award Amount: $2,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $4,000.

Applications are available online from the ADHA Institute for Oral Health website. The application must be completed online. Mailed applications will not be accepted. Please note: Each student may only apply for one scholarship offered by the ADHA Institute. The student should submit an application for the scholarship for which he/she is most qualified. As part of the application, the student must prepare a statement describing his/her long-term career goals, his/her intended contribution to the dental hygiene profession, his/her professional interests, and how his/her extracurricular activities and degree enhance the attainment of his/her goals. For this scholarship, the student must also prepare an essay detailing his/her commitment to improving oral health within the geriatric community and specific examples of community outreach programs in which he/she has participated that served geriatric patients. In addition to the student application, the student must request completion of faculty evaluation and program director sections. These sections must be completed online by the appropriate school personnel. ADHA Institute staff recommends that the student allow three to four weeks for completion of these sections. All applications must be received electronically by the ADHA Institute no later than the deadline date.
