Number of Awards & Eligibility: An average of two awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  3. Must have completed the first year and be entering the second, third, or fourth year of a dental program.
  4. Must enroll in an accredited dental school approved for federal Title IV funding.
  5. Must intend to work as a dentist in Vermont for a minimum of one year following licensure. In addition, although Vermont residency is not required while the applicant is attending dental school, he/she must demonstrate a history of previous Vermont residency.
  6. Must demonstrate academic achievement.
  7. Must be enrolled on a full-time basis.

Description: This interest-free forgivable loan program is available to dental students who have completed at least the first year of their program. Students must intend to work in Vermont and must have a history of Vermont residency; students must also demonstrate academic achievement.

Additional Information: This program was established by the Vermont Legislature to respond to a dentist shortage in Vermont and to ensure an adequate number of dentists to meet the future healthcare needs of Vermonters, including increased access for the Medicaid population. Funding for this program is conditional on annual legislative appropriation. Partial/complete forgiveness of the interest-free loan will occur under the following conditions: (1) completion of a training program leading to eligibility to sit for dental licensure exams; (2) a successful passing grade on the NDBE and Vermont state licensing exams; and (3) completion of one year of employment as a dentist in Vermont. Employment must average no less than 20 hours/week; recipients are expected to accept patients with coverage under Medicaid or other state-funded health care benefit programs. Selection for this program is based on application documents and academic achievement.

Award Amount: Up to $50,000 annually is available under this program. Awards are in the form of interest-free forgivable loans.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $100,000.
