Number of Awards & Eligibility: There are five awards offered annually for both this scholarship and the HIAS Chicago Benton Bernstein Scholarship.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be Jewish.
  3. Must have immigrated to the United States before March 1 and be residing in Illinois.
  4. Must have immigrated to the United States through the assistance of HIAS Chicago and/or applied for permanent residency or citizenship with the assistance of HIAS Chicago between Jan. 1, 2000 and the present.
  5. Must be enrolling or continuing enrollment in a graduate-level educational program.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is available for Jewish graduate students who immigrated to the United States through the assistance of HIAS Chicago and/or applied for permanent residency or citizenship with the assistance of HIAS Chicago between Jan. 1, 2000 and the present. The student must have lived in the United States since March 1 or earlier.

Application requirements for the Chicago Graduate Scholarship are:

  • Interview
Additional Information: Students must demonstrate academic excellence, financial need, assistance to their community, and a well-thought-out educational plan. Students must be able to attend an interview with a staff member of Jewish Child and Family Services during the period between March 7 and April 1. If selected as a winner, the student must be able to receive his/her award at the Annual Meeting of the HIAS Chicago board of directors, to be held on June 21.

Award Amount: $5,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $25,000.

Applications are available online on the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) Chicago section of the Jewish United Fund (JUF) website. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following: a one-page essay that describes his/her immigration experience, and the effect that immigration has had upon his/her life; and a copy of his/her parents' or his/her (if independent) most recent tax return, or an explanation of why his/her family was not required to file taxes. The complete application packet must be mailed to the address provided or submitted online by the deadline date. Students are encouraged to apply as early as possible.
