In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a member of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).
  2. This award is for U.S. students.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
  4. Must be an undergraduate or graduate student during the year of the award.

Description: This scholarship is available for members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). Applicants must submit a short essay on his/her interest in labor organization and public service.

Additional Information: Awarded in honor of former AFSCME Pres. Jerry McEntee, this scholarship is provided to students who best exemplifiexemplify President McEntee’s commitment to strengthening our union through organizing, building political power for working families, defending workers’ rights, and supporting public services. President McEntee served at the helm of AFSCME for 31 years and grew our union to 1.6 million members while helping defeat efforts to privatize Social Security and change Medicare. Selection will be made by a panel of post-secondary educators.

Award Amount: $5,000 annually, non-renewable. Previous recipients are not eligible to reapply.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Application instructions and additional information about this award are available on the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) website. To be considered for this scholarship, students must first complete the online UnionPlus scholarship application using the link provided at the AFSCME website. Applicants must then indicate that they are AFSCME members, and submit an additional essay of no more than 500 words describing the applicant's interest in labor organization, political power for working people, and support for public services. The application and essay must be submitted online no later than the deadline date.
