Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Maine.
  3. Must be the child or grandchild of a veteran who belongs to an American Legion post in Maine.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  5. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate and graduate award.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is available for Maine undergraduate and graduate students who are the children or grandchildren of a veteran who belongs to an American Legion post in Maine.

Application requirements for the James V. Day Scholarship are:

  • Application form
  • Recommendation letters (3)
  • Essay
Additional Information: Applicants must meet the following criteria: show evidence of being enrolled in or attending an accredited college or vocational/technical school; be of good character and believe in the American way of life (demonstrated by letters or recommendation); and exhibit financial need. A committee of judges who are affiliated with the American Legion reviews applications and selects scholarship recipients.

Award Amount: $500 annually, non-renewable. A second award will be provided if funding is available.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available online on the American Legion Headquarters Department of Maine website. In addition to the completed application, the student must also submit three letters of recommendation that cover the topics listed on the application (one from his/her school principal and two from responsible non-relatives, other than teachers), and a statement of 300 words or less describing his/her educational objectives. The application and all additional materials must be submitted to the address provided, postmarked by the deadline date.
