Number of Awards & Eligibility: Five awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
  3. Must be a college sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student.
  4. Must be enrolled full time at any accredited U.S. college or university (regardless of NRF member status) when the scholarship is awarded in September 2018.
  5. Must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  6. Must have the potential to succeed in a retail career, especially in fields most relevant to digital retail such as marketing, e-commerce, computer science, advertising, business, journalism, and information technology. Please note: Applicants do not have to be in a retail program or major to apply, but should demonstrate how their chosen major or graduate program is relevant to digital retail.
  7. Must be 18 years of age or older.

Additional Information: The NRF Foundation and retail executive judges will evaluate each applicant based on their demonstrated understanding, creativity, entrepreneurial spirit and forethought for creating new ways to connect retail customers to brands and products which could potentially help the retail world evolve. In mid-July, up to 25 finalists will be selected and notified. These finalists will receive travel scholarships to attend the Shop.org Summit. In early August, five finalists will be selected and notified. On Sept. 25, 2019, final round interviews will be conducted in Dallas, Texas. Finalists must attend the Shop.org Summit, to be held on Sept. 26-28, 2019, in Dallas, Texas. Previous Ray Greenly finalists are not eligible to apply. Employees, officers, and directors of the NRF and the NRF Foundation and members of their household and immediate families are not eligible to apply.

Award Amount: The overall winner will receive a $25,000 scholarship and four runners-up will each receive a $10,000 scholarship. All awards are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $13,000.

The application deadline date has not yet been finalized for this year, but is expected to remain the same as last year. The deadline date shown here is tentative based on last year's date. Please check back in mid January for a refreshed application deadline date. Applications are available on the National Retail Federation (NRF) Foundation website. The student must apply via the NRF online application. In phase one of the application process, the student will be required to provide the following materials: a one-page essay addressing the topic posted on the NRF website; a personal brand video of two minutes or less in length (must provide a URL to the video); and a copy of his/her transcript (unofficial accepted). Phase one application materials must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. EST on April 3, 2019. Applicants will be notified by April 21, 2019, if they have been selected to move on to phase two of the application process. Such applicants must submit a five-page paper discussing their assigned case study. Applicants must participate in a one-hour call with the company whose case study they have been assigned during the week of March 28. Applicants will also be required to submit a letter of recommendation, a resume, and a high-resolution headshot. Phase two application materials must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. EST on June 13, 2019.
