Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually based on the amount of available funding and the number of qualified applicants. In previous academic yeasr, there were 172 awards disbursed to students in this program (including RN students).
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must enroll in a licensed practical nursing (LPN) program.
  3. Must be accepted to or enrolled in a school of nursing in the State of Virginia which is approved by the State Board of Nursing.
  4. Must have been a resident of Virginia for a minimum of one year before applying for this award.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen, national, hold an immigration visa, or classified as a political refugee. Persons with a temporary or student visa are not eligible.
  6. Must be an incoming or current undergraduate student. Undergraduate is defined, for purposes of this award, as enrollment in a program leading to a diploma, an associate's degree, or baccalaureate degree.
  7. Must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher if currently enrolled in and attending a nursing program.

Description: This scholarship is available for Virginia undergraduate students who are enrolled in a licenced practical nursing program. Students must attend a Virginia college and have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.

Application requirements for the Mary Marshall Nursing Scholarship Program for Licensed Practical Nurses are:

Additional Information: Students must demonstrate financial need to be considered for this scholarship. Under the law, all scholarship awards are made by an Advisory Committee appointed by the State Board of Health. The Office of Minority Health and Health Equity (OMHHE) of the State Health Department serves as the staff element to the Advisory Committee and has no role in the determination of scholarship recipients. The basis for determining scholarship recipients is established by the Advisory Committee with due regard given to scholastic attainment, financial need, character, and adaptability to the nursing profession.

Award Amount: $150 to $2,000 annually. In no event will the scholarship award exceed the financial aid officer's recommendation. The recipient may reapply for the scholarship annually after demonstrating satisfactory academic progress. No student will receive awards under this program for more than five years.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Applications are available online from the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) website. Please note: The application period is May 1 through June 30. Applications will not be accepted before May 1. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following materials: verification of his/her Virginia residency (accepted documents listed on the application); official transcripts from all schools attended; and a one-page narrative summary that explains the significance of this scholarship in pursuing his/her educational goals, any school/community activities, and any skill-set that is pertinent to the nursing profession. It is important that the student consider including plans for professional practice in Virginia after graduation in the summary. "Section 7-Narrative Summary" must appear at the top of the page, and the student must sign and date the bottom of the page. Please note: The dean, chair, or director of the student's nursing school must complete and sign one section of the application. The student's financial aid officer (or authorized person) must complete and sign the financial need analysis section of the application. The application must be typed; handwritten applications will not be accepted. Applications must be mailed to the address provided and must be postmarked by the deadline date.
