Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must have an interest in writing poetry.
  2. This award is for U.S. and international students.
  3. Must be a current undergraduate or graduate student at the time of application.
  4. Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of application.

Description: This scholarship is available for U.S. and international students who submit an original, previously unpublished work of poetry and the associated $5 entry fee. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, and must have not previously published a complete book of poetry. Learn more and apply today!

Application requirements for the Morton Marr Poetry Prize are:

  • Poetry submission
  • $5 entry fee
Additional Information: The Southwest Review prefers not to receive email or faxed submissions and due to the great number of submissions, manuscripts will not be accepted during the summer months of June, July, and August. Manuscripts must be accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed envelope if the applicant desires a reply. The applicant's manuscript will not be returned unless self-address stamped envelope includes sufficient postage.

Award Amount: Prizes of $1,000 and $500 will be awarded to the first and second-place winners, respectively. All awards are offered annually and are non-renewable. In addition, the winning poems will also be published in the 'Southwest Review'.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $750.

This is a poetry contest. Contest information is available on the Southwest Review website. To enter, the student must submit a 'traditional' poem in one of the following format:s a sonnet, sestina, villanelle, rhymed stanzas, or blank verse. Applicants may submit up to six poems that have not been published in a book of poetry. All poems should be typed, double spaced, and printed on white paper, or saved as a Word document without any identifying information included on the page. In addition to the poem, a cover sheet with the author's name, address, and other relevant information must be submitted. A entry fee of $3per poem must be sumbitted with each essay. All essays must be submitted online by the deadline date.
