Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award per eligible school offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be pursuing a master's degree in library science.
  3. Must maintain a 'B' grade point average (3.0 or higher).
  4. Must attend one of the ALA-accredited library schools in New York (New York University, State University of New York at Albany, Long Island University, St. John's University, Pratt Institute, State University of New York at Buffalo, Syracuse University, or Queens College).
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien.
  6. Must be a college senior or older to apply for this graduate award.
  7. Must be a member of the New York Library Association.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is available for U.S. students pursuing a master's degree in library science at one of the ALA-accredited schools located in New York state. Students must have a grade point average of 'B' (3.0) or higher. Both the student and the library school must be members of the New York Library Association.

Application requirements for the NYLA Dewey Scholarship Award are:

Additional Information: The student must be willing to seek a job in New York state for two years or more following conferral of his/her degree. If work in New York state is not found or accepted, an explanation in writing must be sent to the Council of the New York Library Association. Three major factors will be considered in awarding the scholarship: evidence of a commitment to a career in librarianship, demonstrated leadership ability, and scholarly excellence. An interview may be required. The recipient will be notified by Dec. 15. Please note: Board members, officers, employees or relatives of either the NYLA or the Lake Placid Foundation are not eligible to apply.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable. In addition, the winner will receive free attendance at the NYLA Annual Conference to be held after the awarding of the scholarship.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available on the New York Library Association (NYLA) website. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following materials: a typed essay of 300 words or less, addressing his/her professional goals in attending library school and becoming a professional librarian; and three letters of recommendation using the form included with the application. The letters of recommendation must be in sealed envelopes with the recommender's signature across the seal. All application materials must be submitted in one envelope to the dean of the library school or information sciences department at the applicant's institution. The dean will then choose one applicant to be nominated for the award and submit that application to NYLA by Oct. 15. Students should NOT submit their applications directly to NYLA.
