Number of Awards & Eligibility: One or two awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Maine.
  3. Must intend to pursue a career in dentistry at a school accredited by the American Dental Association.
  4. Must be a college senior or older to apply for this graduate award.

Description: This award is available for graduate students who are residents of Maine. Students must plan to study dentistry at a school that is accredited by the American Dental Association.

Application requirements for the Alva S. Appleby Scholarship are:

  • Application form
  • Recommendation letters (2)
  • Official Transcript
  • Personal statement
Additional Information: Applications are reviewed by the MDA's Student Loan Council. The members make their selections by weighing each applicant's academic performance and essay/personal statement. The recipient(s) will be notified by Dec. 31.

Award Amount: $500 to $1,000 annually, non-renewable. This amount can vary based on funds. Students may reapply each year they are in dental school.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $750.

The application and rules are sent out to Maine dental students in the Maine Dental Association's database. Please contact the MDA to be added to the database. The student should include the following with his/her application: one personal reference; two references from dental school instructors (if beyond the first semester of dental school) OR two references from undergraduate school instructors (if enrolled in first semester of dental school); an undergraduate college transcript; a current dental school transcript (if applicable); and a personal statement explaining his/her choice of dentistry as a career and his/her future goals.
