Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must specialize or plan to specialize in library work with children.
  3. Must attend or plan to attend an American Library Association (ALA) accredited school. A list of the eligible schools is available at www.ala.org.
  4. Must have received or be about to receive a four-year undergraduate degree. This scholarship is intended for use for graduate school.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is available for international and U.S. graduate students who specialize or plan to specialize in library work with children. Students must plan to attend an institution that is accredited by the American Library Association (ALA).

Additional Information: The Caroline M. Hewins Scholarship Award Committee is composed of the chief librarian of the Hartford Public Library, chairman; a representative for the Association of Library Service to Children; a representative for the Children's Services section of the Connecticut Library Association; and a representative for the Connecticut Media Association. Financial need is not a consideration for this award. NOTE: Preference is given to applicants who plan to pursue a career in public library service.

Award Amount: $4,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $4,000.

Applications are available on the Hartford Public Library website or by writing to the library using the listed contact information. The applicant must submit a transcript of college credits through the first semester of his/her senior year or in support of an awarded degree. He/she must also submit evidence of application and acceptance to an accredited school of library service. If these items are not sent with the application, the Hartford Public Library must receive them within a reasonable amount of time afterward.
