Number of Awards & Eligibility: Up to four awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be of Asian or Pacific Islander descent (at least 25 percent Asian/Pacific Islander ancestry).
  3. Must self-identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender (GLBT).
  4. Must graduate from a high school in one of the following counties in California: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, Santa Clara, Solano, Sonoma, San Francisco, and San Mateo.
  5. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate and graduate award.
  6. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  7. Must be between the ages of 17 and 25 at the time of application.
  8. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
  9. Must be involved in the GLBT community.
  10. Must enroll on a full-time basis.

Description: This scholarship is available for U.S. undergraduate students of Asian or Pacific Islander descent who self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, and are involved in the GLBT community. Students must demonstrate financial need, have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, and graduate from a high school in one of the following counties in California: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, Santa Clara, Solano, Sonoma, San Francisco, and San Mateo.

Additional Information: Students must demonstrate financial hardship to be eligible.

Award Amount: Up to $15,000 will be divided among up to four recipients annually, renewable for an additional three years as long as renewal requirements are met.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $60,000.

Scholarship information is available on the Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF) website in the 'Donor Involved Scholarships' section. Applications are available by contacting Mr. Edward Tang at the email address provided. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: an official high school transcript; an official college transcript if he/she has taken college courses; a typed, double-spaced personal statement of at least 500 words and no more than 850 words addressing the topics listed on the application; proof of United States citizenship (photocopy of birth certificate, passport or naturalization papers) or documentation of legal residency (photocopy of visa or green card); and two letters of reference, one from a teacher or academic adviser and one from a work or volunteer supervisor, youth leader, or personal acquaintance. Letters must be signed, dated, and written on school, work, or other appropriate organizational letterhead. Applicant must also provide evidence of financial need by submitting a Student Aid Report (SAR) or a copy of his/her parents' or legal guardians' most recent IRS Form 1040 (or his/her own Form 1040 if independent). The SAR is obtained by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The application and all supporting materials must be submitted to the address provided and received by 5 p.m. PDT on the deadline date. Please note: All applicants will be required to attend a personal interview that will be conducted by a minimum of four committee members in an office setting.
