Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Hawaii.
  3. Must demonstrate academic achievement with a grade point average of 2.7 or higher.
  4. Must plan to attend an accredited two- or four-year college or university as a full-time student (12 credits per semester for undergraduate; 9 credits per semester for graduate).
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  6. Must major in fine arts (drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics or photography).
  7. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate and graduate award.

Description: This scholarship is available for Hawaii undergraduate and graduate students who are majoring in fine arts (drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics or photography). Students must have a grade point average of 2.7 or higher.

Additional Information: This scholarship was established in 2000 by Donald Kanagawa to benefit Hawaii residents pursuing studies in the field of fine arts (drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics or photography). Preference is given to incoming freshman and students who have participated in local and national art competitions or other outstanding accomplishments in the field of art. All applicants for this award must demonstrate financial need and good moral character. Recipients will be notified after the scholarship selection committees meet, which could be any time between May and August.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Online application forms are available on the Hawai'i Community Foundation website. The student should visit the Hawai'i Coommunity Foundation's website for detailed instructions on how to complete the online application. In addition to the online application form, the student must submit the following supporting materials: the printed confirmation page that is generated after applying online; a typed, double-spaced personal statement of two to three pages answering the questions listed at teh provider's website; an official copy of his/her most recent transcript; and a copy of his/her SAR (Student Aid Report). The SAR is obtained by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. A student will not be able to submit his/her application until all required supporting documents are electronically attached to the application. Applications must be submitted by 4 p.m. HST on the deadline date.
