Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. Last year, four awards were offered.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a Ph.D. student in the field of solid-state electronics.
  2. Must be a member or apply to membership in The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Solid State Circuits Society (SSCS).
  3. This award is for U.S. and international students.

Description: This award is for Ph.D. students studying in the area of solid-state circuits who are members of IEEE and the SSCS.

Application requirements for the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society Predoctoral Achievement Award are:

  • Essay
  • Official Transcript
  • Recommendation letter (2)
  • One page biography
Additional Information: Applicants must have completed at least one year of graduate study, be in a Ph.D. program in the area of solid-state circuits, and be members of IEEE and the Solid State Circuits Society. The awards will be made on the basis of academic record and promise, quality of publications, and a graduate study program well matched to the charter of SSCS.

Award Amount: A $1,000 honorarium, non-renewable. The society will also cover the cost of the student’s attendance at ISSCC (travel, registration fee and hotel, subject to certain limits).  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Application information is available from The Institue of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) website. There is no application form. To apply, students are to provide the following: a biography (1 page) including IEEE member number and contact information; a copy of all relevant undergraduate and graduate transcripts; at least two letters of recommendation, one from the principal advisor, addressing academic record, accomplishments, and promise, and graduate research program. The student must also submit an essay on graduate study plans. The essay should be about 2 pages, and contain the following: Summarize what you have completed and what is planned. List authored and co-authored publications and include a copy of each. Describe work that must be done to complete your graduate program of study - explain its importance and what is novel about its approach.Students are recommended to collect all application documents into a single, complete package and submit it via email to the provided email address. Each file in the application may be attached individually or within a zip file collection. Recommendations must be sent directly by the recommender to the provider's email. The application period will begin on September 1 and ends on October 15.
