Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. *Please note: The number of recipients for this program varies according to the number of students meeting the eligibility requirements in any given year.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be a resident of Los Angeles County, California.
  4. Must plan to attend full time (a minimum of 12 units per term) at an approved college or vocational school in the U.S.
  5. Must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.7 or higher.
  6. Must be Jewish.
  7. Must be a high school senior, undergraduate, or graduate student at time of application.

Additional Information: Since its founding in 1972, the JVS Scholarship Fund has awarded $4 million to over 3,000 students. As part of the application process, the applicant may be required to attend a personal interview at JVS in Los Angeles, CA. All interviews will be held in April and May. Primary criteria for scholarship selection are financial need, Jewish community involvement and community service. Award decisions will be made after the scholarship committee has reviewed all applications. Letters announcing award recipients will be mailed in June. Through the granting of academic scholarships, the JVS Scholarship Fund strives to strengthen the Jewish Community by supporting financially needy Jewish students from Los Angeles County in their pursuit of college, graduate, and vocational education.

Award Amount: The monetary award amount ranges from $1,000 to $5,000 per scholarship. Scholarship award decisions are made annually, and are not automatically renewable. The applicant may reapply and re-qualify each year if he/she wishes to be considered for additional funding. Available funding and the applicant pool vary every year and there is never any guarantee of an award.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,750.

The scholarship application is available on the Jewish Vocational Service (JVS) website. Applications must be completed online. In addition to the completed application, the following materials must be submitted: an official transcript; a letter of recommendation that is signed by a school professional or employer; a personal statement addressing the questions listed; a copy of his/her or his/her parents'/guardians' most recent Federal Tax Return; a copy of his/her most recent Student Aid Report (SAR); 'Declaration of Legal Domicile/Certification' application (downloadable from the online application). To receive his/her copy of the SAR, the applicant must complete and file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students must file the FAFSA by the deadline date. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. If applicable, the student must submit proof of his/her permanent U.S. residency (see website for details and applicability). The supporting materials must be submitted as one unstapled package. Supporting materials must be sent via regular mail and postmarked no later than the deadline. The online application must be submitted no later than the deadline.
