Description: The Women’s Independence Scholarship Fund is available for women who have left an abusive domestic situation. They are also pursuing an education that aims to help them to provide economic self-sufficiency for themselves and their children. The Scholarship Program was established in 1999.

Additional Information: The Women’s Independence Scholarship Program, Inc. began as a program of The Sunshine Lady Foundation (SLF) in 1999. For 8 years, their mission was to provide scholarships to female survivors of intimate partner abuse who were changing their lives through education. Then SLF Founder and President, Doris Buffett, announced her goal to endow WISP as its own entity. By 2008, WISP was a sister organization. Their efforts focus on stopping the cycle of domestic violence by offering financial empowerment through access to higher education.

Award Amount: The smallest award has been about $250. The average award is around $2,000 per school term. Scholarship Awards are for tuition, books and fees. They are paid directly to the educational institution. Awards is renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.
