In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must attend one of the participating schools. A list of participating schools can be found at www.hertzfoundation.org/dx/Fellowships/Guidelines/Schools.aspx.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident.
  4. Must meet one of the following criteria: have received a bachelor's degree by the time he/she proposes to commence tenure of his/her fellowships; propose to complete a program of graduate study leading to an advanced degree; or have already commenced graduate study.
  5. Must be enrolled in a field of graduate study that is directed toward the understanding and solving of problems associated with contemporary human concern, using applications of knowledge from the physical and engineering sciences. (This is in contrast to work whose primary purpose is to extend the frontier of knowledge in the physical sciences for the sake of new knowledge alone.)

Description: The Fannie and John Hertz Foundation is available to graduate students majoring in physical sciences at select partner universities of the foundation. The list of eligible schools can be found at www.hertzfoundation.org/dx/Fellowships/Guidelines/Schools.aspx. All applicants are evaluated on merit only.

Application requirements for the Hertz Fellowship are:

Additional Information: The applicant must demonstrate evidence of exceptional creativity, a broad understanding of physical principles, and outstanding potential for innovative research. The applicant must morally commit to make his/her skills available to the United States in times of national emergency. Successful applicants will also possess the following qualities: exceptional intelligence and creativity; excellent technical education; orientation and commitment to the applications of the physical sciences; extraordinary accomplishment in technical or related professional studies; features of temperament and character conducive to high attainment as a technical professional; appropriate moral and ethical values; and leverage.

Award Amount: $34,000 over a nine-month period.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $102,000.

Online applications are available on the Fannie and John Hertz Foundation website. In addition to the completed application, the applicant must submit: two sets of official transcripts of all his/her college academic records, including undergraduate and (if applicable) graduate study; 'Reference Reports' from four different individuals, who know well the applicant's academic and professional experience and ability, which must be received by the foundation by Nov. 2; a copy of his/her GRE scores (see application for details); and an essay as specified on the application. Official transcripts should be sent to the postal address provided. Applications must be submitted online by 11:59 p.m. PST on deadline.
