Number of Awards & Eligibility: Multiple awards offered annually. In prior years, there were 7 awards given in the age group 9-12 category, and there were 13 awards given in the age 13-16 category.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be 8 to 16 years of age as of the application deadline date.
  3. Must have completed (within the last year) or be completing a project concerning environmental health, advocacy, research, or protection of the natural world.

Description: This award program is open to international and U.S. applicants who are 8 to 16 years of age. Applicants must have completed or be completing a project concerning environmental health, advocacy, research, or protection of the natural world.

Application requirements for the International Young Eco-Hero Awards Program are:

Additional Information: Preference is given to projects of 2+ years and/or ongoing projects. Winners are selected by a team of independent judges with experience in environmental issues. The applications will be judged according to several criteria, including but not limited to: originality; difficulty; organization; length of time devoted to the project; influencing/educating others; use of outside resources (e.g., library, experts, media, community leaders); degree of success in reaching goals; the impact on the environment. Award winners will be notified in May. Previous winners, immediate relatives of AFN board members, active reading panel members, or judges may not apply.

Award Amount: $100 to $500, awarded as cash prizes.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $300.

Applications are available online on the Action for Nature website. To apply, the student must be currently conducting or have conducted a project concerning environmental health, advocacy, research, or protection of the natural world, and be able to describe this project in detail on the application. The project must be close to completion or have been completed within the last year. The project must be action-based and self-initiated, and not one assigned by a teacher or other adult. Science fair and Scouting Badge projects will only be considered if they include environmental action, educational outreach to others or extended studies beyond the science fair and Scouting badges. Projects related to domestic or confined animals, compositions, reports are not accepted. The student must include contact information (name, phone number, email address, and relationship to him/her) for a reference on the application. References cannot be relatives. The reference should know about the student's environmental project. Supporting materials (e.g., newspaper clippings, photographs, web sites, etc.) may be submitted. Such materials must be emailed to [email protected] with the subject line "[application year] supporting materials [student's full name]". Applications must be completed via the online form on the Action for Nature website, and must be submitted by the deadline date.
