What is a No Essay Scholarship?

No essay scholarship is an easy scholarship to apply for and requires no written essay. Unlike loans, you do not need to pay back a scholarship, whether it requires an essay or not.

You don’t usually have to write a long personal statement. The program or organization offering the no essay scholarship could use other requirements such as accomplishments and past grades. Many scholarship programs offered online may not require an essay.

Niche, ScholarshipPoints, ScholarshipOwl and more don’t require an essay. They may only ask you to fill out an online form and that’s it! As they say in hockey, “if you don’t shoot, you don’t score”.

Are No Essay Scholarships Legit?

Many college students wonder if no essay scholarships are legit. Some even refer to them as sweepstake scholarships or “no brainers”. In fact, they are like contests. But in the end, if you apply and win, the money you receive may go towards books, tuition, fees and other college expenses.

That said, there are scams to be aware of. Since you may likely need to provide your name, address, telephone and email. Oh, and you probably will have to check a box that accepts a “privacy policy”. This is where you want to tread with some caution.

Here are a few ways to make sure that the scholarship you’re applying to is legit.

  1. Scholarships do not come with fees. The only thing you might have to spend on is a postage stamp. So, make sure you say “no way” to a no essay scholarship with an upfront fee.
  1. You should fill out any application yourself even if you fill out a simple form. You want to control who you give your information to.
  1. Even an award that doesn’t ask for an essay is not a sure win. If a company claims to guarantee you a scholarship, think twice.
  1. Check the source. Some scammers may want to sell your contact info. Look to see how they notify winners and what kind of track record they have.

What’s Different about Scholarships With No Essays?

About 2,032,503 full time, first time undergraduate students received financial aid. To receive a scholarship, you usually have to show that you are in financial need. Or that you merit the award because of your supreme talents.

You might find these scholarships at your college or from other sources. Many need many details about why you qualify and should receive the award. This is tedious for some and a welcome challenge for others.

Scholarships that do not ask for an essay are different. In some cases, a no essay scholarship may require you to fill out an online form. They may not even ask for other documents like transcripts and references. This may feel rather like a contest.

Another kind may not want a written essay from you. But on the application, you may need to include something else (that could be fun!). Things like a video, art work, song, poem or tagging the donor on social media.
