Description: This essay contest is open to U.S. and international students who are in first grade through graduate school. Contest winners may be asked to attend the awards banquet in California at their own cost to receive their prize.

Application requirements for the Writers’ Square Scholarship Program are:

Additional Information: A panel of judges will evaluate eligible essays for each session's Judges Winners in Round 1. These judges' scores will also be used to determine each division's Grand Prize winners in Round 2. Essays are judged on the following criteria: comprehension; organization; creativity; writing; and conclusion. The session 1 Judges Winners will be announced on April 30. The session 2 Judges Winners will be announced on July 30, 2019. The session 3 Judges Winners will be announced on Oct. 30, 2019. Voting will take place until 11:59 p.m. PDT on the essay submission deadline to determine audience favorite winners. Winners may receive an invitation to an Awards Banquet in the fall, if one is held, where they will receive trophies. Winners are responsible for their own travel costs. Trophies will not be mailed. Please note: Scholarship checks will be mailed to each winner after announcement of that session's winners.

Entry information is available on the Writers' Square website. To enter the competition, each student must write an essay on the current session's topic. Essays may be written in English or Chinese. Students may only submit one entry per session for each language. Essays submitted during one session may not be submitted in subsequent sessions. Word limits are as follows: first through sixth grade students, 500 words; seventh through twelfth grade students, 1,000 words; undergraduate and graduate students, 1,500 words. Each student must complete an online entry form. The session 1 entry period begins at 12:01 a.m. PDT on Jan. 1, and ends at 11:59 p.m. PDT on March 31. The session 2 entry period begins at 12:01 a.m. PDT on Apr. 1, and ends at 11:59 p.m. PDT on Jun. 30. The session 3 entry period begins at 12:01 a.m. PDT on Jul. 1, and ends at 11:59 p.m. PDT on Sept. 30.
