Prizes are awarded as follows: first place in division 1, $500; first place in division 2, $700; first place in division 3, $1,000; second place in division 1, $300; second place in division 2, $500; second place in division 3, $700; third place in division 1, $200; third place in division 2, $300; third place in division 3, $500; honorable mention in division 1, $100; honorable mention in division 2, $200; honorable mention in division 3, $300.
45 awards offered annually. There are 15 prizes awarded for each of the 3 submission sessions, 5 per division. Division 1 is grades 1-6; division 2 is grades 7-12; and division 3 is college.
A panel of judges will evaluate eligible essays for each session's Judges Winners in Round 1. These judges' scores will also be used to determine each division's Grand Prize winners in Round 2. Essays are judged on the following criteria: comprehension; organization; creativity; writing; and conclusion. The session 1 Judges Winners will be announced on April 30. The session 2 Judges Winners will be announced on July 30, 2019. The session 3 Judges Winners will be announced on Oct. 30, 2019. Voting will take place until 11:59 p.m. PDT on the essay submission deadline to determine audience favorite winners. Winners may receive an invitation to an Awards Banquet in the fall, if one is held, where they will receive trophies. Winners are responsible for their own travel costs. Trophies will not be mailed. Please note: Scholarship checks will be mailed to each winner after announcement of that session's winners.
