In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be currently attending high school or be home-schooled.
  3. Must be between 14 and 18 years of age at the start of the contest period.
  4. Must reside in Alameda, San Francisco, San Mateo, or Santa Clara County.

Description: This award is available for high school students in Alameda, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara Counties who are under the age of 19. Students must submit an original essay accompanied by photographs, create a Blog/Facebook page, or create an original video that examines either the mistreatment of one animal species or one cause of animal suffering, occurring anywhere in the world, and possible measures to reduce it.

Additional Information: The Voice for Animals High School Essay Contest is made possible through partnership between the Animal Welfare Institute, the Humane Education Network, and the Palo Alto Humane Society. Entry forms can be found on The Human Education Network website. There are two separate categories for this contest. Students between the ages of 14 and 15 are invited to write an essay that addresses the mistreatment of one animal species or one cause of animal suffering, or the preservation of one species threatened with extinction. The essays must be between 1,400 and 1,500 words in length and written in English. All essays must include citations, the student's name and essay title at the top of each page, be numbered, and double-spaced. The file size must not exceed 2Mb. Students between the ages of 16 and 18 may submit an essay of 1,400 to 1,500 words in length, OR document a project where they have an active and personal involvement in helping to mitigate the suffering of animals. Students may choose to submit either an original video, or essay with pictures. Videos must be between no longer than three minutes in length and must be uploaded to either YouTube or Vimeo. Essays must be between 900 and 1,000 words in length, written in English, include citations, have the applicant's name and essay title at the top of each page, be numbered and double-spaced, and inlcude photographs. The total size of the file must not exceed 2Mb. Blogs and Facebook pages must span a period of at least three months with a minimum of three posts per week. Applications and submissions must be submitted online by 11:59 p.m. PDT on the deadline date.
