Number of Awards & Eligibility: Ten awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a high school senior to apply for this undergraduate award.
  4. Must be the daughter, son or financially dependent grandchild of an active or retired AFSCME member.
  5. Must enroll full time in a four-year degree program at any accredited college or university.

Description: This award is for a U.S. high school senior who has a parent or guardian who is an AFSCME member. The student must attend an accredited college or university.

Application requirements for the AFSCME Family Scholarship are:

  • SAT/ACT scores
  • Verification documents
Additional Information: The AFSCME Family Scholarship Program is an ongoing program of scholarships available to children and financially dependent grandchildren of AFSCME members. The scholarship selection committee will thoroughly examine all of the application materials submitted by each scholarship applicant. In addition to all application materials, the selection committee will carefully consider any recommendations or other evidence (e.g., high school activities or academic honors) of the applicant's character or abilities. Winners will be announced by March 31.

Award Amount: $2,000 annually, renewable for four years.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $20,000.

Applications for the program are available online from the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) website and are accepted Aug. 1 through Dec. 31 of each year. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit: two letters of recommendation or other evidence of his/her character or abilities; a copy of a current AFSCME membership card from the student's parent, grandparent, or legal guardian; and an official copy of the student's high school transcript and SAT and/or ACT scores. There are also sections on the application to be filled out by the student's parent and guidance counselor.
