Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately 10 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must enroll full time.
  3. Must be a member of a minority group that is underrepresented in chemical engineering (African-American, Hispanic, Native American, or Alaskan Native).
  4. Must be an AIChE student member.
  5. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  6. Must enroll in an accredited four-year college or university and pursue a science or engineering degree.
  7. Must be a high school senior at time of application.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: International and U.S. high school seniors who are AIChE members planning to pursue a science or engineering major are eligible for this award. Students must be part of a minority group, enroll full time, and have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Application requirements for the AIChE Minority Scholarship Award for Incoming Freshmen are:

  • Application form
  • Personal statement
  • Official Transcript
  • Recommendation letter
  • Financial letter
Additional Information: The selection of award recipients will be based on the following criteria: academic record; participation in school and/or outside jobs/activities as outlined in the student's letter and in the letter of recommendation from a high school counselor, math teacher or science teacher; reason(s) for choosing science/engineering; and the student's financial need as outlined in a letter from the parent or legal guardian, listing financial resources for educational support. Awards will be announced by July or August. No award will be sent out after December. The award will be disbursed to each student upon receipt of a copy of the proof of fall semester college registration.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available online from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) website. In addition to the completed application, each student must submit a letter of no more than 300 words outlining the college or university he/she has chosen to attend (when and why), his/her reasons for choosing a science/engineering major, and possible career choices that may be of interest; an official transcript of high school grades; a letter from his/her parent/guardian verifying financial need and including a list of financial resources for educational support; a letter of recommendation from his/her high school guidance counselor, math teacher or science teacher containing, but not limited to verification of the student's grade point average and high school graduation date, verification of high school senior class average grade, confirmation of the student's minority group, and information about the student's school and other activities. The completed online application form must be completed and all supplemental application information must be received by the deadline date.
