Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually and is dependent on funding. 23 awards were offered last year.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be a graduating high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate award.
  4. Must be a current resident of affordable housing, meaning the resident family must have been income qualified to move onto the property or is receiving rental assistance through a recognized Federal housing program (Section 8, Rent Supplement, Rental Assistance Payments, or Low Income Housing Tax Credit program).
  5. Must enroll in three or more classes.
  6. Must demonstrate community leadership through volunteer work at school or in the community.
  7. Must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.

Additional Information: This scholarship has been established in recognition of AIMCO’s leading role as a provider of affordable rental apartments throughout the country and its dedication to improving the lives of low and moderate income families.

Award Amount: $1,500 to $3,500 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,500.

Applications are available online from the National Leased Housing Association (NHLA) website. To be considered for this award, students must first register for an account on the NHLA scholarship application portal. Applicants must then select just one scholarship he or she is eligible for and complete the corresponding online application form. In addition to the short informational sections of the online application, students may also be asked to upload supporting documents such as transcripts, financial information forms, or letters of recommendation. All applications and supporting documents must be submitted online by 5:00 p.m. EST on the deadline date.
