Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must plan to major in elementary education.
  3. Must plan to attend one of the following South Dakota public universities as a first-time freshman: Black Hills State University, Dakota State University, Northern State University, or the University of South Dakota.
  4. Must have a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  5. Must be a legal U.S. resident.
  6. Must be a resident of South Dakota.
  7. Must graduate from a South Dakota high school.
  8. Must be a high school senior at time of application.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is available for South Dakota high school seniors who are planning to attend an eligible South Dakota public university. The student must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and plan to major in elementary education.

Additional Information: The Annis Irene Fowler/Kaden Scholarship was established in 1989 by the family of Annis Irene Fowler Kaden to recognize and continue her dedication to education. Born in Grant County, South Dakota, to an English immigrant family, Annis Fowler began a teaching career in 1927 that spanned nearly 50 years. She obtained her B.A. from Northern Normal School and eventually specialized in teaching students with various learning disabilities. Selection criteria are graded as follows: grade point average, 10 points; high school courses (special attention given to science and mathematics courses), 10 points; letters of recommendation, 10 points; and essay, 10 points. Special consideration is given to students with demonstrated motivational ability, a disability, or who are self-supporting.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable. Awards will be distributed in two equal installments during the fall and spring semesters.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

The application deadline date has not yet been finalized for this year, but is expected to remain the same as last year. The deadline date shown here is tentative based on last year's date. Please check back in January for a refreshed application deadline date. Applications are available online at the South Dakota Board of Regents (SDBOR) website and from guidance counselors at participating high schools. In addition to a completed application, each student must submit the following documents: an original essay on a topic listed on the application; two letters of recommendation from teachers that address his/her academic achievement, character, leadership, and motivational abilities; an official high school transcript, complete through the junior year, which indicates class rank and cumulative grade point average and includes a list of courses in progress for his/her senior year; and a copy of his/her ACT test results. The application and all supporting materials should be mailed to the South Dakota Board of Regents at the address provided and must be postmarked by the deadline date.
