Number of Awards & Eligibility: Seven awards offered annually. There is one award given for each of the seven state districts.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Maine.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  4. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate and graduate award.

Description: This scholarship is available for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students who are Maine residents.

Application requirements for the Children and Youth Scholarship are:

  • Application form
  • Personal statement
  • Official Transcript
  • Recommendation letters (2)
Additional Information: Scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement and financial need. Academic achievement is demonstrated by evaluation forms, rank cards, and the like. Financial need is shown by income tax forms, a financial statement, or any other means available. A committee of judges who are affiliated with the American Legion reviews applications and selects scholarship recipients.

Award Amount: $500 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $500.

Applications are available online on the American Legion Headquarters Department of Maine website. The applicant must submit the following with his/her application: a letter describing why he/she wants a scholarship and what he/she plans to do after college; a letter from his/her principal or guidance counselor (or other source if no longer in high school); a letter from an outside person other than family (this may be a copy of a letter used for another scholarship); and a high school or college transcript, as applicable. The application and all supporting materials must be sent to the address provided, postmarked by the deadline date.
