Number of Awards & Eligibility: Three awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a high school senior, undergraduate, or graduate student at the time of application.
  3. Must have been diagnosed with, or have an immediate family member (parent, grandparent, sibling, child) who has been diagnosed with esophageal or stomach cancer.
  4. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  5. Must be a resident of California.
  6. Must have a combined math and verbal SAT score of 1000 or higher, or an ACT score of 21 or higher.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available for students in California who have been diagnosed or personally affected by a family member's diagnosis of cancer. Applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and demonstrate financial need.

Additional Information: The DLH Foundation was established in memory of Deana LaRae Hughes, who passed away in 2007 at age 39 after battling a rare and pernicious form of gastro-esophageal cancer. Deana’s commitment to supporting her favorite charities, including student organizations, inspired the Foundation to provide scholarships for deserving students. The DLH Foundation’s mission is to create a community and help to find a cure.

Award Amount: Up to $2,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Applications and information are available at The DLH Foundation website. In addition to the completed application form, students must submit the following items: a short essay describing how cancer has affected them or a loved one; official transcripts; at least one letter of recommendation; a signed statement from a licensed Medical Doctor verifying the date on which the affected person(s) was/were diagnosed and describing the type of cancer (diagnosis), the treatment, and the ultimate outcome; and verifying the affected person(s) as current or past patient(s); and a copy of the applicant's most recent FAFSA report or tax returns. Completed applications packages must be postmarked by the deadline date.
