Number of Awards & Eligibility: Three awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be a current high school senior.
  4. Must plan to pursue a two- or four-year degree at a university or college in Texas in summer or fall 2018.
  5. Must have taken a leadership role to prevent litter in his/her school and/or community.
  6. Must be a resident of Texas.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is for U.S. high school seniors in Texas who have taken leadership roles to prevent litter in their schools and/or communities. Students must pursue a two- or four-year degree at a university or college in Texas.

Application requirements for the Don’t Mess With Texas Scholarship are:

Additional Information: Winners may be asked to participate in a brief video describing their litter prevention project. Employees and their immediate families (spouses, parents, siblings, children, and each of their respective spouses or people living in same household of each) of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Keep Texas Beautiful (KTB), Forestar, and Sherry Matthews Advocacy Marketing are not eligible to participate.

Award Amount: One award of $6,000 and two awards of $2,000 will be given. All awards are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,333.

Applications are available online from the 'Don't Mess With Texas' website in PDF and online form. In addition to the completed application, each student must submit a 300- to 350-word essay describing how he/she identified a specific litter-related problem in his/her school or community and what creative and/or sustainable solution he/she developed, or how he/she became involved in an effort to solve this problem. The student may also provide up to three additional documents that support his/her essay. For verification purposes, the student must provide contact information for two adults who helped him/her and were a part of the efforts described in his/her application essay. Applications must be submitted online or mailed to the address provided and postmarked by midnight CST on the deadline date.
