Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually and is dependent on funding. Last year, 32 awards were offered.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a bona fide resident of western Washington, particularly in or around Seattle.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  4. Must have a combined SAT score of over 1200 or an equivalent ACT score of 27 or higher. The applicant's scores on the writing portion of the SAT will also be considered.
  5. Must be a graduating high school senior at time of application.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: Bona fide residents of western Washington, particularly those living in or around Seattle, who plan to enroll at a private college or university are eligible for this award. Students must be graduating high school seniors and have an SAT score of 1200 or higher (or the equivalent ACT score).

Additional Information: *Please note: Applicants must plan to seek a degree at an accredited, independent institution which receives its fundamental support from sources other than taxes. Eligibility for a scholarship is based upon demonstrated financial need as determined by each institution to which the student has been accepted. Recipients of assistance are not selected on the basis of scholarship alone, but on the basis of all factors which the trustees of the foundation consider relevant, without regard to race, sex, color, ethnic origin, religious belief, marital status, or physical handicap. The recipient is expected to maintain academic and personal performance consistent with the original award criteria. The program is designed to assist outstanding students with a portion of their cost of education. Other financial aid may be applied for and received. Scholarship funds will be paid to the educational institution which the student will be attending.

Award Amount: Up to $5,000 annually, non-renewable. The recipient may re-apply annually for up to four years for a total of up to $20,000.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications are available from the Edmund F. Maxwell Foundation website. As part of the online application, the student must submit the following documents: a list of extracurricular, personal, and volunteer activities in the format provided on the application; a list of his/her work experience from the last three years in the format provided on the application; and an essay of 250 to 500 words on one of the topics listed on the application. In addition to a completed application, each student must request the following documents to be submitted: an official, certified high school transcript, sent by the appropriate official at the student's high school; and official ACT and/or SAT scores (if not reported on the high school transcript), sent by the testing agency. Each applicant must also file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by the deadline date. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. Applications must be submitted by April 30. Please note: Each applicant must submit a 'Financial Aid Worksheet' and 'Financial Aid Worksheet Cover Letter' directly to the financial aid office of each institution for which the applicant is seeking financial aid. Each institution must then send the completed financial aid worksheet to the Edmund F. Maxwell Foundation. Worksheets must be received by May 14.
