Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be an immigrant to the United States who came to the country with or without parents OR a first-generation United States citizen of immigrant parents or guardians. Applicants may be documented or undocumented immigrants.
  3. Must be a graduating high school senior who will graduate in the year of the application, a graduate, or have completed and received a GED. The applicant must be accepted to an accredited college, university, or community college. Current undergraduate students are also eligible.
  4. Must have attended a Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools District high school for one or more years, or be scheduled to complete a minimum of one year at the end of the current academic year.

Additional Information: The purpose of the Felicia Brewer Opportunity Scholarship is to create a life-transforming opportunity for immigrant or first generation students who have overcome significant adversity, giving them the opportunity to pursue their dreams and improve their lives through education or training. Students studying in the U.S. as a part of an exchange program or the children of parents in an exchange program are not eligible. Family members of Triangle Community Foundation or members of the Selection Committee are not eligible to apply. Applicants must have overcome significant adversity to pursue educational goals. Examples of adversity include but are not limited to: escaping a dangerous life from home country, torture, learning English as a second language, poverty, being required by parents or guardians to work to help support the family, abuse in the family, substance abuse, physical or mental handicaps. Must demonstrate financial need through financial information documentation. Notification letters will be mailed no later than April 15.

Award Amount: The Felicia Brewer Opportunity Scholarship will cover the cost of tuition and required fees and college-recommended health insurance up to a maximum of $20,000 per academic year and is renewable for up to three years (or its equivalent) at an accredited college or university in an undergraduate program or community college. The scholarship is renewable if the recipient maintains a minimum semester grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 grading system or the equivalent on other grading scales and remains a student in good standing. The scholarship is not available for graduate or post-graduate education. The Scholarship cannot be used to cover living, travel, childcare, or other similar expenses. The cost of required books and other required materials will be paid for if recipients are attending a community college. Payments will be made to institution of higher learning on the student’s behalf and not to the student directly.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $80,000.

The application deadline date has not yet been finalized for this year, but is expected to remain the same as last year. The deadline date shown here is tentative based on last year's date. Please check back in October for a refreshed application deadline date. Applications are available online from the Triangle Community Foundation website. In addition to the complete application form, the student must submit a financial information form to document financial need; a recommendation from one non-family member, preferably someone who can address how the applicant has overcome adversity and his/her desire for further education; official transcripts from all United States high schools attended and/or proof of GED and/or official college transcripts if available; and 2015 or last submitted federal tax return (and spouse’s if married and parent’s/guardian’s if applicant is under 24 and single or has been claimed as a dependent on a parent’s/guardian’s most recent return). Applications and supporting materials must be submitted online by the deadline date.
