Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a high school senior.
  4. Must be a Maryland resident.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is open to U.S. high school seniors who reside in Maryland. Students must submit an essay on the current year's topic to be considered.

Application requirements for the Flag House Scholar Award are:

  • Application form
  • Essay
Additional Information: The winner will be chosen by a panel of judges as a result of the essay submission. Essays will be graded on the following traits of a strong essay: ideas; organization; word choice; sentence fluency; voice; conventions. Please note: The winner must be able to travel to Baltimore, Maryland, to read his/her essay aloud at the Flag House in June.

Award Amount: $1,812 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,812.

Applications are available online on The Star-Spangled Banner Flag House website by clicking on the "Essay Contest" tab. Each student must submit an essay of no more than 350 words on the topic listed on the application. The essay must be submitted via the online application form; submissions will not be accepted via mail or email. Submissions will be accepted until 4:00 p.m. on the deadline date.
