Number of Awards & Eligibility: Eighteen awards offered annually at the national level.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be in grades 7 through 12 at time of application.

Description: U.S. citizens/permanent residents in grades 7 through 12 are eligible to enter this contest. Students must be sponsored by a member or unit of the Fleet Reserve Association (FRA) to apply.

Application requirements for the Fleet Reserve Association Essay Contest are:

  • Essay
Additional Information: Awards are presented at the end of May. *Please note: Students do not have to be children of FRA or Ladies Auxiliary members to apply for this contest. A student may submit only one essay each year. All essays become the property of the FRA.

Award Amount: Prizes are awarded in the form of U.S. Savings Bonds and are distributed as follows: a $2,500 bond to the first-place winner in each grade level; a $1,500 bond to the second-place winner in each grade level; and a $1,000 bond to the third-place winner in each grade level. One grand-prize winner will be selected to receive $5,000. Please note: Winners will be asked to provide their Social Security numbers for the sole purpose of complying with the rules of issuance of a U.S. Savings Bond.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,667.

Additional information about this award is available on the Fleet Reserve Association (FRA) website by clicking on the 'Events and Programs' link. This is an essay contest. To enter the contest, the student must submit an essay of 350 words or less on the current year's theme. The essay must be legibly written or typed on one side of the paper. Students' names must not appear on the essay, but on the essay cover sheet only. Essay cover sheets are available online on the FRA website. *Please note: Each entrant must be sponsored by a branch of the FRA, a unit of the Ladies Auxiliary, or a member-at-large in good standing. The proper sponsoring branch/unit is the one closest to the student's home. The branch does not need to be in the same state where the student resides. Entries sponsored by branch or unit members must be submitted to their respective Branch Americanism-Patriotism Committee by the deadline date, for judging at the branch level. Entries sponsored by members-at-large must be submitted using the contact information listed, postmarked no later than the deadline date.
