Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a high school senior at time of application.
  3. Must be a U.S. resident.
  4. Must pursue an engineering degree through an ABET-accredited program. A listing of ABET-accredited programs is available online at main.abet.org/aps/Accreditedprogramsearch.aspx.
  5. Must rank in the 90th percentile in both math and critical reading on SAT I or composite ACT scores.
  6. Must have a grade point average of 3.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Description: High school seniors planning to enroll in an ABET-accredited engineering program are eligible for this award. An eligible applicant must have a grade point average of 3.75 or higher and SAT/ACT scores ranking in the 90th percentile.

Additional Information: The Young Radiator Company established this scholarship in memory of the company's founder, Fred M. Young, Sr. Mr. Young started the company in 1927 and saw it grow to become a major force in the field of heat transfer. He had a high regard for the value of engineering in terms of its contribution to the success of society. Fred M. Young, Sr. was a life member of SAE and was elected to the Fellow grade of membership in 1982. Scholarship recipients will be notified by June 30. All SAE scholarship winners will be posted in July/August.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, renewable for three additional years. To renew, the student must submit a renewal form by May 30 annually.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available online from the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) website by clicking on the "Freshman Year of College Scholarships" link. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following materials: a copy of his/her SAT/ACT scores if not included on his/her transcript (copy printed from website acceptable); and an official high school transcript. All applications and supporting materials must be submitted online by the deadline.
