In previous years, approximately 12 awards were given.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Parents of applicants must be legal residents of Georgia for two years or applicant must be a resident of the state for three years.
  3. Must attend or plan to attend a college or university in Georgia.
  4. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate award.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  6. Must major in or have an interest in journalism.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available for U.S. undergraduate students who are residents of Georgia and plan to attend a college/university in the state of Georgia. Students must also be majoring in journalism.

Additional Information: The Georgia Press Association Board of Directors founded the GPEF in 1963 to foster interest in print journalism education. The GPEF Scholarship Program consists of four named scholarships. They are the Kirk Sutlive Scholarship, the William C. Rogers Scholarship, the Morris Newspaper Corp. Scholarship, and the Durwood McAlister Scholarship. The Kirk Sutlive Scholarship is awarded annually to a junior or senior majoring in either the news-editorial or public relations sequence at the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. The William C. Rogers Scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior majoring in the news-editorial sequence at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. The Morris Newspaper Corp. Scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding print journalism student. The Durwood McAlister Scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding student majoring in print journalism at a Georgia college or university. GPEF does not discriminate based on race, sex, color, religion, national origin, age or disability.

Award Amount: $1,000 to $2,250 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,354.

Applications are available online on the Georgia Press Educational Foundation (GPEF), Inc. website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: a budget for the next academic year; his/her most recent grade transcript; a school photograph; a copy of his/her SAT scores; the student's or student's parents' most recent tax return; and a recommendation from a high school counselor, principal, college professor, or Georgia Press Association member. Applications and all supporting materials must be sent to the address provided, and be received by the deadline date.
