Number of Awards & Eligibility: One or more awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must reside in Berks County, Pennsylvania.
  4. Must intend to pursue or be currently pursuing postsecondary, undergraduate education at an accredited institution. Graduate students are not eligible to apply.
  5. Must have an ethnic background that originates from Mexico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Central America, or South America.
  6. Must meet one of the following criteria: a current high school senior or individual of any age who has a high school diploma or GED and is responsible for raising his/her child or children and intends to enter an institution of higher education as a full-time or part-time student; OR an individual of any age who has at some time received a high school diploma or GED and intends to enter an institution of higher education as a part-time student; OR an individual who has at some time received a high school diploma or GED, is age 25 and above at time of application, and intends to enter an institution of higher education as a full-time student; OR a current undergraduate student who is age 25 or above at time of application and is currently enrolled at an institution of higher education as a full-time or part-time student.

Description: This scholarship is open to non-traditional students from Berks County, Pennsylvania, whose ethnic background originates from Mexico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Central America or South America. Students must meet one of the following criteria: high school senior raising child(ren); part-time students of any age; and students who are 25 years of age or older.

Additional Information: Scholarship applicants shall exhibit a commitment to past academic achievement. The recipients will be involved in community activities, along with raising a family and/or holding down a job. The intent is to acknowledge and encourage those individuals who have demonstrated a level of personal responsibility necessary to attend and succeed in a continuing education institution, and who have a financial need. Applicants are encouraged to file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). All applicants will be notified in May. Berks County Community Foundation employees, board members and/or committee members are not eligible to apply for or be nominated for a scholarship offered by Berks County Community Foundation, nor are their immediate family members. However, immediate family members are eligible to be nominated and recognized as the recipient of a scholarship, but without the financial award of the scholarship. Immediate families include spouses; children, stepchildren, grandchildren, stepgrandchildren, and their respective spouses; siblings and their spouses; and ancestors. The ineligibility period for Berks County Community Foundation board members or employees and their family members extends five years after board service or employment terminates. The ineligibility period for committee members who are not Berks County Community Foundation staff or board is in effect only during their term of service and is only related to the committee on which they make decisions.

Award Amount: $2,100 annually. Awards are non-renewable; however, past recipients may reapply each year and will be considered with other applicants.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,100.

Applications are available on the Berks County Community Foundation (BCCF) website. All applicants must apply via the BCCF online application. Students must create an account to access the application. As part of the application, the student will be required to submit the following materials: an essay of 250 to 500 words that addresses the topics listed on the application; his/her most recent high school or college transcript; and contact information for a professor, teacher, school official, clergy, employer, advisor, or community leader that knows him/her well and will write a letter of recommendation on his/her behalf. The recommender will receive instructions via email for submitting the letter. Applications must be submitted by the deadline date.
