Number of Awards & Eligibility: Six awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
  3. This award is for U.S. students.
  4. Must be a resident of West Virginia.
  5. Must be a high school senior at the time of application.

Description: This scholarship is available for high school seniors in West Virginia who have unmet financial need and a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.

Additional Information: The Horatio Alger West Virginia Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to students in the State of West Virginia who have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity and who aspire to pursue higher education. The award is funded through the generosity of the Suzanne and Walter Scott Foundation. The applicant must have a strong commitment to pursue a bachelor's degree at an accredited institution. The student may begin his/her studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution. The applicant must also plan to enter college no later than the fall following high school graduation. Each applicant must demonstrate involvement in co-curricular and community activities. Scholarship recipients will be announced in January.

Award Amount: The total value of this award is $10,000 paid out in installments annually. If the student receives this award he/she is guaranteed the funding for the full 5 years of his/her undergraduate program by maintaining a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $10,000.

Applications are available online from the Horatio Alger Association website. Each applicant must submit an online application. Paper applications are not accepted. The applicant must also provide a copy of the front page of his/her parent/guardian's most recent individual federal tax return (1040, 1040A, 1040 EZ or 1099 SSA-Social Security Tax Form). If the student's parent/guardians were not required to file a tax return, the student should include statement copies of any government benefits, such as food stamps or Public Assistance documents. Online applications and supporting materials must be submitted by the deadline.
