Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately 20 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
  2. Must be a minority student.
  3. This award is for U.S. students.
  4. Must be a high school senior or undergraduate transfer student.
  5. Must attend Wayne State University.
  6. Must attend a university in Michigan.
  7. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  8. Must be majoring in journalism or communications.

Description: The Journalism Institute for Media Diversity Scholarship is available for minority students at Wayne State University who are majoring in journalism or communications.

Application requirements for the Journalism Institute for Media Diversity are:

  • Two references
  • Writing sample
  • Resume
Additional Information: Every year, Wayne State University's Journalism Institute for Media Diversity provides a number of students with the scholarships and mentoring needed to prepare for careers in the media - print, broadcast and/or digital. In a diverse democracy, it is important that all voices are heard, representing every creed, color, race, ethnicity and gender/sexual orientation. Students enrolled in the scholarship program must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and must also participate in available internships each academic term.

Award Amount: $1,000 to $5,000 annually, renewable for up to three additional years.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,000.
