Number of Awards & Eligibility: Ten awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must have a sponsor who is a dues paid member of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists.
  2. Must be a high school senior (who has been accepted into an undergraduate program) or a current undergraduate student.
  3. Must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  4. This award is for U.S. students.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is for CBTU members who are high school seniors who have been accepted into college or college undergraduates and have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

Additional Information: The Leonard C. Ball and James H. Bell Scholarship Fund was established to honor the late Leonard Ball, the first executive director of CBTU and the top aide to AFSCME International Secretary Treasurer William Lucy, and the late Jim Bell, president of the New York Chapter of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists and a major force in the city politics of New York City.

Award Amount: $2,000 offered annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Application forms and more scholarship information are available by contating the CBTU's national office. In addition to a completed application students must also submit the following: an essay; official school transcripts; a letter of acceptance, recent photograph of his/her self; and official SAT/ACT score. Applications and additional materials must be submitted to the student's local chapter on the deadline date. Each applicant should check with his/her local chapter as individual deadline dates are typically earlier than the posted national deadline.
