Number of Awards & Eligibility: Up to 18 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a legal resident of the United States.
  3. Must reside within the 50 United States or the District of Columbia at time of application.
  4. Must be 17 to 24 years of age.
  5. Must have experienced the death of a parent or legal guardian.
  6. Must be accepted to or currently enrolled in a college, university, or trade school within the 50 United States or District of Columbia.

Additional Information: All eligible entries received will be judged by a panel of qualified judges on the equally-weighted criteria of: 1) The compelling nature of the story (i.e., how the entrant dealt with the loss on a personal and financial level) and 2) The educational nature of the story regarding the role of insurance (i.e., how life insurance, other forms of insurance, or lack of insurance impacted the family's ability to meet future financial goals). Potential winners will be selected in August.

Award Amount: Scholarship awards range in amount from $5,000 to $15,000. All awards are provided annually and are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $7,679.

Students may apply online on the Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education website or request a paper application by calling or emailing using the contact information listed. Applications are accepted beginning in February. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit an essay of 500 words or less or a video of three minutes or less discussing how the death of a parent or guardian affected his/her life both personally and financially. The student should explain how life and/or other forms of insurance (or lack of insurance) made a difference in his/her family's financial situation. The student should also be sure to describe how the loss of his/her parent or guardian impacted his/her college plans. All applications must be completed online by the deadline date. Late applications will not be considered.
