Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually and is dependent on funding and the number of eligible applicants. Last year, two awards were offered.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a current undergraduate student, graduate student, or professional.
  4. Must pursue a career in outdoor writing, radio and television, wildlife photography, art, lecturing or video and film making. An ideal candidate is a talented communicator with outdoor interests who wants to enhance his/her professional communication skills.
  5. Must be a member of the Outdoor Writers Association of America.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: U.S. professionals seeking to enhance their communication skills are eligible for this award. Applicants must have an interest in the outdoors and be members of the Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA).

Additional Information: OWAA’s John Madson Fellowship provides funding to attend educational opportunities, including the OWAA annual conference and Goldenrod Writing Workshop. Educational programs do not have to be OWAA-organized programs. The fellowship is funded through the John Madson Fellowship Fund, an endowment that thrives primarily through OWAA member contributions and fundraising efforts. Its goal is to enhance professional communication skills for as many members as possible. After attending the OWAA annual conference, Goldenrod Writing Workshop or other educational programs, fellowship recipients will submit receipts for reimbursement. Miscellaneous expenses must be itemized.

Award Amount: The award amount varies based on the applicant's need and will be reimbursed pending the recipient's submission of receipts. Last year, over $2,400 was awarded to the two recipients. Awards are offered annually and are non-renewable. The fellowship can be used to reimburse tuition/registration and room and board costs, as well as qualifying travel or miscellaneous expenses.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,200.

The application deadline date has not yet been finalized for this year, but is expected to remain the same as last year. The deadline date shown here is tentative based on last year's date. Please check back in December of 2019 updated information about the 2020 scholarship deadline Applications are available online from the Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA) website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit a cover letter explaining his/her need, proposal and plan for continuing education; an itemized budget of miscellaneous expenses; and a work sample (published article or photos, tape of broadcast program, etc.). The applicant must submit three copies of the application packet, postmarked by the deadline date.
