Number of Awards & Eligibility: Three awards offered.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be enrolled in grades 9-12 during the current academic year.
  4. Must play a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument.

Description: “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, in conjunction with the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, is pleased to announce its 2021 Concerto Competition for High School Musicians. The winner will appear as a guest soloist with the U.S. Marine Band and receive a $2,500 scholarship from the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. Second and third-place winners will receive $1,000 and $500 scholarships respectively.

Application requirements for the Marine Band Concerto Competition are:

  • Application form
  • Recommendation letter
  • CD of music performance
Additional Information: This competition is open to high school musicians (grades 9-12) enrolled during the 2020-2021 academic year. Performers of woodwind, brass or percussion instruments may apply. IMPORTANT NOTE: After the 2021 concerto competition, the next opportunity for musicians of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments to apply will be for the 2023 competition. The 2022 concerto competition will be open to string and piano players only. Previous competition winners and immediate family members of current/former U.S. Marine Band members are not eligible. All applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Award Amount: 1st place winner can receive up to $2500. 2nd and 3rd place winners will receive $500 and $1000 respectively.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $4,000.

Applications are available online on the Marine Band website. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following: a letter of recommendation from a teacher familiar with his/her musicianship; and an unedited CD recording of the applicant performing his/her selected work in its entirety with accompaniment. A list of acceptable works is available on the application as well as detailed instructions for the performance. Application packets may be mailed or submitted electronically. Instructions for electronic submission are available on the application. Applications must be postmarked or timestamped by the deadline date.
