Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually based on the number of eligible students.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or a non-citizen eligible under Title IV regulations.
  3. Must be 24 years of age or younger at the start of the academic year.
  4. Must be a current or former foster child who was placed in the custody of the state through a Care and Protection Petition or be a child whose guardianship was sponsored by the Department of Children and Families through age 18. The student cannot have been adopted nor returned home.
  5. Must attend or plan to attend a Massachusetts public college or university.
  6. Must be enrolled in an undergraduate degree, certificate, or short-term certificate program, or be taking non-credit courses.
  7. Must have been in the custody of the Commonwealth for at least six months before age 18.

Description: This award is available to Massachusetts undergraduate students who are current or former foster children who were placed in the custody of the state through a Care and Protection Petition and were never adopted or were not returned home. Students must be 24 years of age or younger and plan to enroll full time at a Massachusetts college or university.

Additional Information: The Department of Social Services Tuition Waiver for Foster Care Children is designed to provide financial support for higher education to foster children in state custody who were neither adopted nor returned home. An eligible student must have been in the custody of the Commonwealth for at least 12 consecutive months, be in compliance with applicable laws regarding Selective Service Registration, not be in default of any federal or state loans or owe a refund for any previous financial aid received, and not have received a prior bachelor's degree or its equivalent.

Award Amount: Awards provide a tuition waiver equal up to 100 percent of the resident tuition for approved courses. Awards are renewable for up to three additional years.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,924.
