Number of Awards & Eligibility: Ten awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Kentucky.
  3. Must plan to attend the University of Louisville.
  4. Must have a grade point average of 3.8 or higher.
  5. Must major or minor in political science.
  6. Must have an SAT score of 1390 or higher OR an ACT score of 30 or higher.
  7. Must enroll as a full-time student.
  8. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  9. Must be a high school senior to apply for this undergraduate award.

Description: This award is available for U.S. graduating high school seniors who are residents of Kentucky and plan to attend the University of Louisville. Students must have a grade point average of 3.8 or higher, have an SAT score of 1390 or higher or an ACT score of 30 or higher, and major or minor in political science. This award can be used abroad.

Additional Information: The McConnell Scholarships for Political Leadership are awarded to talented, deserving high school seniors reflecting the state's geographic diversity.

Award Amount: The amount of each award varies annually. Awards are normally for tuition and a modest stipend for books. Additionally, each scholar will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C., a five week study abroad trip to China and annual leadership retreats. All awards are renewable for three years if the recipient maintains a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, satisfies course requirements for a minor in political science, and participates in all activities sponsored by the center.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $16,500.

Applications are available online on the McConnell Center website. To apply for this award, the applicant must submit a completed application to the University of Louisville, an official high school transcript listing his/her grade point average, an essay indicating his/her career goals and leadership qualities, and three letters of recommendation as specified on the application. The application and all supporting materials must be submitted to the address provided, and be received by midnight on the deadline date.
