Number of Awards & Eligibility: On average, two awards offered annually. Last year, two full awards and three partial awards were given.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be the hearing son or daughter of one or more deaf parents.
  3. Must be a high school senior or current undergraduate college student at time of application.

Additional Information: The Millie Brother Scholarship is an annual scholarship awarded to hearing children of deaf adults to help them pursue their education. First-time winners will receive preference.

Award Amount: Awards are on average $3,000 annually, non-renewable. A student may reapply for as many years as he/she is in school.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,000.

Applications are available on the Children of Deaf Adults (CODA) website. Applications must be typed or handwritten in black ink. In addition to the completed application, each applicant must submit the following documents: official transcripts from his/her high school and/or college (if currently enrolled); two sealed letters of recommendation from teachers; a signed letter of agreement (last page of the application); and a typed, two-page, double-spaced essay. The essay should describe how the applicant's experience as a child of a deaf adult has shaped his/her life and goals and should also include a description of future career aspirations. Each essay will be judged for organization, content, creativity, and sense of purpose. If emailed, the essay must be in .doc, .txt, or .pdf file format. The letter of agreement must be faxed to CODA at the number provided. All other application materials may be mailed or emailed using the contact information provided, and must be postmarked by the first Friday in April.
