Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a female.
  3. Must live in Monterey or Santa Cruz counties in California.
  4. Must plan to attend flight school or receive instruction from an independent flight instructor.
  5. Must plan to obtain a private pilot license or an advanced rating to further her career in aviation.

Description: This scholarship is available for female students to assist in obtaining their private pilot license or an advanced rating to further their career in aviation. Students must live in Monterey or Santa Cruz counties in California.

Application requirements for the Monterey Bay Ninety-Nines Aviation Scholarship are:

Additional Information: The student applicant must be in good health and not be dependent on medication or have any other disqualifying condition. The advanced applicant must have a current medical certifcate, appropriate to the rating she seeks. If the applicant is already a licensed pilot, she must have completed any necessary written exams, have a current flight review or equivalent, and have all ratings prerequisite to the rating she seeks before money is awarded, but not necessarily before application. Otherwise, she must have completed the private written exam before money is awarded, but not necessarily before application. If not already a licensed pilot, applicant must be proficient in English. Applications will be judged on the applicant's: activities in and commitment to aviation; ability to reach goals; financial need, as shown in her budget as submitted; personal essay; and letters of recommendation. If the recipient does not complete the rating appropriate to her award within one year of the award date, her status will be reviewed. Special circumstances will be considered. If her progress is not acceptable, all funds paid out must be reimbursed to the Monterey Bay Ninety-Nines Aviation Scholarship Fund within 60 days.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable. The scholarships will be paid directly to the flight school or independent flight instructor conducting the training. Receipts showing hours flown and signed by both student and instructor must be submitted before funds are awarded. The last $150 will be awarded upon submission of a receipt for the checkride. Recipients who successfully complete their ratings will receive a one-year's membership in both the Ninety-Nines International Organization of Women Pilots main organization and the Monterey Bay chapter.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available online on the Monterey Bay Ninety-Nines website. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following: a personal essay of 500 words or less addressing the areas listed on the application; no more than three letters of recommendation, at least two of which must from a person knowledgeable about her interest and accomplishments in aviation; and a budget of anticipated expenses for the rating sought, anticipated funding to meet these expenses (including any other anticipated financial aid), any special circumstances, and whether she intends to rent or own an aircraft. The budget should be signed by the flight school or instructor the student intends to use to obtain the rating. The student must submit originals of all application materials. The complete application packet must be mailed (using regular mail, not certified) to the address provided, postmarked by the deadline date.
