Number of Awards & Eligibility: Three awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a high school senior at the time of application.
  2. Must be a resident of the Greater Boston area.
  3. This award is for U.S. and international students.
  4. Must identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, or as a straight ally dedicated to LGBT causes.

Description: This scholarship is available for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered students, as well as straight allies. Applicants must be current high school seniors graduating from a school in the Greater Boston Area, and must demonstrate a history of activism in favor of LGBT causes.

Application requirements for the PFLAG Greater Boston Chapter Elsie Frank Scholarship are:

Additional Information: Greater Boston PFLAG’s Elsie Frank Scholarships honor the late mother of Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank. Mrs. Frank was a member of Greater Boston PFLAG’s Honorary Board and a lifelong advocate for the rights of marginalized people. Selection is based entirely on essay responses as well as the applicant's advocacy for LGBT causes.

Award Amount: Up to $5,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications are available at the Greater Boston Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) website. In addition to a completed application form and essay responses, students must submit two letters of reference - one from a teacher or faculty member, and one from an individual who is familiar with the applicant's community service efforts. All application materials and supporting documents must be mailed to the address provided above, and must be received by the deadline date.
