Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. There were 50 scholarships awarded last year.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must have a minimum of a 40dB bilateral hearing loss, as evidenced on audiogram by an SRT of 40dB or greater in both ears.
  4. Must enroll as a full-time student.
  5. Must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  6. Must be a high school senior or current undergraduate student. The student must pursue a bachelor's degree at a college or university in the United States. Graduate degrees, associate's degrees, community colleges, and vocational programs do not qualify

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: Sertoma International offers scholarships for hearing-impaired U.S. undergraduate students. The applicant must be a high school senior or current undergraduate student at time of application and have a grade point average of 3.2 or higher.

Application requirements for the Sertoma Hard of Hearing and Deaf Scholarship are:

  • Audiogram/Hearing health professional statement
Additional Information: Support from the Sertoma Foundation and Oticon, Inc. provide the funding for the scholarships. All scholarship recipients will be notified by June 30 each year. Sertoma cannot send out lists of recipients to those who do not receive a scholarship. Sertoma only notifies recipients; no notification means the student did not receive the scholarship.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable. Students may reapply each year. The funds may be used for any term, including the summer term, during the awarded academic school year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available on the Sertoma website. As part of the application, the student must provide information on honors/awards received, community volunteer activities, interscholastic activities, and extracurricular activities (including jobs held). The student must also provide a personal statement of 300 to 500 words explaining how this scholarship will help him/her achieve his/her goals. The information and personal statement must appear in the provided spaces on the application; attachments will not be accepted. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following documents: two letters of recommendation; high school and/or college transcripts, that include his/her name, the school's name, and grade point average (does not have to be official); and a recent audiogram or statement from hearing health professional (no older than five years). The student must provide an additional copy of the application, letters of recommendation, and transcript(s). The copy must have all personal information blanked out. Application materials must be single-sided, and may not be stapled. All materials must be submitted in a single envelope by mail to the address provided. Materials must be received by 4:00 p.m. CST on the deadline date.
